Learning to work with others

Last week, our instructor organized groups to publish a newsletter on whatever topic we wanted. I was with three girls, and we started thinking about a subject that resonated with us and our audience could connect. Therefore, we chose what places to go to if people were new Ensign College students. We talked with our teacher and received feedback, but we need to continue working on it, and we will submit it this week.

Teamwork is essential to succeed in your life.

What I learned working as a group on the newsletter is the following:

  • Different opinions. It’s obvious. Perhaps nobody will agree immediately with what you think to do or the topic you present; there will be different points of view, and if I think something could be the best, others won’t. I learned that the group needs to find something everyone agrees on and wants to do. Diversity not only of culture but also of thoughts is necessary in the group.

  • Attitude. Following what I mentioned, I learned to accept other comments positively and manage my reactions well. Let's be honest: You and I don't like it when you present an idea to the group and they don't receive it well. Nonetheless, we must be patient, strive to accept it with a smile, and ask for other preferences.

Working as a group helps me understand other cultures and ways of working and recognize other ideas that may be the best way to make the team succeed. Also, I can encourage collaboration in my career by helping people succeed, offering my honest help, and being a good example by showing patience and a good attitude when working in future groups. After all, people will want to collaborate with me if I respect them and treat them like they would like me to treat them.
